Department of Security and Safety

This Department also has a unit in charge of Policing and Law Enforcement. The unit is created for purpose of monitoring citizens’ arrest and detention by police and other security agencies to ensure they are done in full compliance with the provisions of the laws of Nigeria including its international human rights and humanitarian obligations and they include Sections 33 (right to life), 34 (dignity of human person and freedom from torture), 35 (personal liberty), 36 (fair hearing and fair trial), 37 (privacy), 39 (freedom of expression), 40 (peaceful assembly and association), 41 (freedom of movement) and 42 (freedom from discrimination); all contained in the Chapter Four of the 1999 Constitution and their counterparts in the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights and other international rights treaties ratified by Nigeria. The individual and group-citizens’ right to self defense as contained in Section 258 of the Criminal Code (operational in Southern Nigeria) and Section 59-60 of the Penal Code (operational in Northern Nigeria) must also be considered in the course of arresting and detaining citizens. The Security and Safety Department is under direction and supervision of the board chair who is also a criminologist and graduate of security studies. The Policing and Law Enforcement unit of the Department is headed by Comrade Chibueze Nwajiaku, a volunteer and university graduate, Human Rights activist and former Research Secretary of the Civil Liberties Organization, Anambra State Branch.

Department of Democracy and Good Governance

This Department is in charge of promotion and advancement of democracy and good governance including leadership accountability. It is headed by Barr Chinwe Umeche, a volunteer and vibrant legal practitioner, Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, democracy campaigner and human rights activist.

Department of Civil Liberties and Rule of Law

The Department promotes and advances Citizens Liberties and the Rule of Law and is headed by Barrister Obianuju Joy Igboeli, a volunteer and vibrant legal practitioner, Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, feminist, Human Rights activist and avowed supporter of prohibition of discrimination against persons living with disabilities.

Department of Campaign and Publicity

It is the image maker of Intersociety and coordinates all media relations and communications within Intersociety and between Intersociety and others. It is headed by Barrister Chidimma Udegbunam, a volunteer and amiable feminist, rights activist, legal practitioner and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Department of Social Media Communications

This Department is put in place to manage the social media communications of Intersociety and they include twitter handling and posting, updating and managing photos, videos, graphics, reports, releases and other publications of Intersociety on Facebook, Linked-in, YouTube and other web media. The Department also ensures that transmitting and receiving social media information by Intersociety are done in strict compliance with codes, ethics and laws guiding global social media communications and relations. The Department is headed by a university trained social media communicator or activist blogger or a graduate of Mass Communications. 

Department of International Justice and Human Rights

The Department is in charge of advocacy regarding international justice and human rights including researching and monitoring of their global development and factoring them into Intersociety’s advocacy schemes. It is headed by Barrister Ndidiamaka Chinaza Bernard, a volunteer and hardworking legal practitioner with a post graduate degree (LLM) in ICT Law. She is also Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, feminist and human rights activist.

Department of Field Data Collection and Documentation

The Department of Field Data Collection and Documentation is in charge of gathering raw data on issues pertaining to our thematic areas and have them preliminarily investigated and documented subject to their expert and final investigation and editing before being adopted, advocated upon or put in use and archived. This Department is headed by Comrade Samuel Kamanyaoku, who is a volunteer and holder of Higher National Diploma or HND and grassroots human rights activist.

Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution

The Department takes charge of peace campaigns and conflict and dispute resolution. It also applies alternative dispute resolution where and when required. The alternative dispute resolution is different from arbitration and litigation. In our Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution, truth and reconciliation, mercy and forgiveness, healing and peace are facilitated and ensured between or among warring or disputing parties or citizens. The Department also champions restorative and compensatory justice for the victims by state actors and non state actors and is headed by a volunteer who is university trained expert in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution or Law or Criminology.

Department of Litigations and Public Petitions

Department is created to coordinate all class action and pro bono litigations and public petitions bordering on issues regarding our thematic areas and other human rights issues. Litigations include interpretative, declarative, enforceability and civil or citizens claimant suits and public petitions include petitions bordering on violation of individual-citizen’s fundamental human rights and other human rights such as group rights recognized in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights as well as issues bordering on democracy and rule of law and public security and safety. The Department is headed by a volunteer who is an activist legal practitioner.

Department of Human Rights Education

This is another important Department in our Organization. This is because Intersociety was formed to provide a solid platform for citizens with potentials and zeal to serve humanity and society to be given the opportunity and requisite skills or trainings to do so. The scheme is called “training the trainers of the trainees” and the Department of Human Rights Education is importantly put in place for this purpose. The Department also offers processes of impartation of  values, ethos and ethics of democracy and its leadership, human rights and rule of law and encourages or promotes good social behaviors including staying away from greed, vices and crimes or celebrating questionable riches and despicable social lifestyles. The Department is headed by a volunteer who is university trained graduate in social sciences including psychology and sociology or criminology and law, etc with vast experience in defense of human rights.

Department of Women and Children’s Rights

The Department of Women and Children’s Rights is created for championing the rights of Women and Children, recognized in the UN Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) of 1985 and the UN Child Rights Convention of 1990, all ratified by Nigeria. Part of the responsibility of this Department is also to promote campaigns on ending all forms of discrimination against persons living with disabilities, in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (2007) and its Optional Protocol of 2010 and Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, Laws of the Federation of        Nigeria 2019. The Department is headed by a volunteer who is female legal practitioner or gender rights advocate.

Membership Department

Intersociety is not open and full membership Organization, but an arrangement is made under this Department for associate membership or membership club as a department of Intersociety. Coined as “Society Watch Rights Club”, it offers interested citizens an opportunity of coming together under our watch and tutorship so as to make their contributions in making their immediate and general environments better, human rights conscious and compliant. Membership forms for “Society Watch Rights Club” are available for interested citizens and leadership structure for them put in place. Members shall not operate or function beyond the conditions or guidelines lay down by the Board of Intersociety and its Chair or trespass or usurp the functions of the Board Chair and the Principal Officers. This Department is headed by a volunteer who is university trained graduate who is grounded in rights activism.

Department of Human Rights and Democracy Defenders

It is in line with the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (Declaration on the Rights and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1998 that this Department is put in place. Intersociety affirms the need to support and protect human rights (and democracy) defenders in the context of their work, in accordance with Articles 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13 of the Declaration. Human Rights and Justice advocacy for purpose of supporting, defending and protecting human rights defenders, akin to Amnesty International’s ‘Prisoners of Conscience’ project, is the priority of this Department. The Department is headed by a versatile human rights defender with academic degree(s) in Law or Criminology or Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, etc.

Department of Finance and Accounts

This Department takes charge of all incomes and expenditures and maintains the account books of Intersociety. It also functions as internal auditor and works with external auditors during the external auditing of the accounts of Intersociety. It is headed by a higher institution and professional body trained accountant.

Department of Information and Communications Technology

The Department is created and put in place in realization of the pivotal role of ICT in modern time global communications including the importance of ICT in modern human rights activism and campaigns.  The Department takes charge of hardware and software component of Intersociety’s organizational and physical structures including installation and maintenance of intranet, extranet, internet, computers and their software and storage and transmission of messages and other forms of communication within and outside Intersociety. The Department is headed by an ICT expert and a university graduate.
