Emeka Umeagbalasi

Emeka Umeagbalasi, born in 1969, is a university trained Criminologist and Graduate of Security Studies. He is also holder of Master of Science Degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution and has been a grassroots Human Rights and Democracy campaigner since 1995. He founded Intersociety in 2008 and presently serves as its board chair and lead-director. Umeagbalasi is also a researcher and investigator of international repute and has won several local and international human rights and humanitarian awards and also received several human rights and NGO trainings and certificates. A former Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) in Anambra State and Vice Chair of its Southeast Zone, and onetime Coordinator of Amnesty International (Nigeria), Onitsha Pre-Group, Umeagbalasi also attended the US Government International Exchange Programs and became alumni/fellow, International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) on NGO Management (Class of June 2013). He had saved thousands of lives, defended thousands whose human rights and constitutional liberties were trampled upon by state actors and non state actors, secured the release of hundreds unlawfully arrested and detained, and promoted and campaigned for religious freedom and tolerance. Umeagbalasi is a pluralist and strong exponent of ethnic, religious and cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence and has conducted several researches and investigations exposing inter and intra religious persecutions (i.e. killing and maiming by radical state actor and non state actor Muslims of fellow Muslims and faithful Christians and burning or destruction of their properties including sacred places of worship and learning) perpetrated in different parts of Nigeria especially North-central and Northeast Regions (Old Middle Belt) as well as Southeast and South-South Regions (Old Eastern and Mid Western Regions). Emeka Umeagbalasi is a man of facts and figures and has written several books, reports and articles on his Igbo tribe, human rights, and democracy, rule of law and public security and safety. Apart from chairing the Board of Intersociety and leading the Organization, Umeagbalasi is Convener of the Southeast Based Coalition of Human Rights and Democracy Organizations (SBCHROs), a group of 20 rights and democracy groups in Southeast Nigeria and the Eastern Nigerian Rights and Intelligentsia Coalition, a group of 27 local and international based and respected human rights and democracy activists and intellectuals.
