Emeka Umeagbalasi is an Ezinifite-Aguata, Anambra State of Nigeria’s born astute, dogged, and consistent Human Rights and Democracy Campaigner since 1994 when he joined Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Nigeria’s premier Human Rights and Pro-Democracy advocacy organization, formed in 1987 and has held several elective positions at the State and Zonal Levels of the Organization. He also became a volunteer-member of Amnesty International (Nigeria) in 1995 and later served as its Group Coordinator of Onitsha Pre-Group; and from 1996 to 1998, Umeagbalasi was an international Associate Member of Human Rights Watch (USA). Born in Feb 1969 and married; Emeka Umeagbalasi is a Criminologist and Graduate of Security Studies with a Second-Class Upper Division from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) where he also obtained a master’s degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. Umeagbalasi has held various positions in different Human Rights and Pro-Democracy movements and belongs to several local and international NGOs and bodies of experts from where he gathered experiences, expertise, courage, inspirations, and aspiration to form the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (InterSociety) in 2008. He has written several reports and articles and authored or co-authored several books including but not limited to: “THE NOMAD TERROR (USA: 2021)” and “THE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND NOBLE WAYS OF LIFE OF THE IGBO PEOPLE OF AFRICA (A comprehensive account of the origin, kingship, justice system and noble ways of life of the Igbo People of Africa and modern time challenges facing them: 2019: unpublished)”.
The Intersociety Leader (Umeagbalasi) is a multiple ‘merit awards’ winner’ and has obtained several Human Rights and Democracy Education Certificates including but not limited to: “a Certificate of Participation” in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) of the United States Department of State (DoS)’s Educational and Cultural Affairs on “NGO Management in the U.S.” (Class of June 10-28, 2013). Among top Merit Awards bestowed on Emeka Umeagbalasi are: The Nigerian Red Cross Society’s ‘Henry Donant Gold Merit Award’ (Sept 14, 2008); ‘Merit Award for Excellent Service to Humanity and Assistance to the Less Privileged, Orphans and Widows’ by the Child Emancipation and Welfare Organization of Nigeria (2009); ‘Defense of Human Rights Veteran Award’ by the Law Students Association of the Anambra State University (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University), Igbariam, Anambra State (June 22, 2012); ‘Volunteer General for Service to Humanity Award’ by the Nigerian Red Cross Society (Dec 5, 2015); ‘The People’s Advocate Award for Human Rights Advancement’ by the Law Students Association of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State (June 8, 2018), ‘Award of Recognition for the Intersociety’s Contribution in Engendering Rule of Law and Human Rights in the South-East’, shared with the Intersociety and bestowed by the NUJ or Nigerian Union of Journalists’ Correspondents’ Chapel, Enugu State Council (Nov 17, 2023); and ‘Award of Excellence for Defense of Human Rights’, in Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) bestowed by the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), Anambra State Branch (Dec 10, 2023).
